Long time friend and Apple manager Neil Aspinall had compiled footage from various sources of concert, interview and television appearances.

From this archival footage Aspinall assembled a 90 minute feature film tentatively titled, "The Long And Winding Road" which he completed in At this point none of the Fab Four had any involvement in the project and plans for it's release lay dormant. Despite a reasonably finished rough cut of Neil's film, some personal and professional problems ket the project unreleased.

In the meantime some of the same footage was used by other producers in projects such as "The Compleat Beatles" However, much additional footage remained and Aspinall reported that there was "much rarer footage" which had yet to see the light of day. This, of course, ultimately lead to the Anthology project and the multi-episode sage of The Beatles entire career.

So what exactly does the film look like and what footage does it contain? The version presented in this set is the "reasonably finished rough cut" that is very much a work in progress. No titles. No commentary. Just a collection of clips that tell their own story. Nothing is examined in detail, some important events are missing entirely and others passed over with a brief mention. Having said that is is still a fascinating document with some very rare footage.

A banner on the cover proclaims that it contains unreleased video footage which I believe to be true, but since it's only in the Let It Be section the audio has already been available. This two disc set contains one DVD and one audio C.

Take 20 From Revolution - TakeOn 9th February the world of rock music and American culture was turned upside down by The Beatles legendary debut performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show". From that day forward the world would never be the same again. It has been said that before John, Paul, George and Ringo the world was in black and white and after them in technicolour.

The Beatles arrived in America on 7th February of that fabled year and within 48 hours or so, a new youth culture would begin.

They first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on 9th February for what would be the first of three consecutive weekly appearances. Reportedly watched by over 73 million viewers it has long been mentioned as one of those "where were you" moments. On that first show the lads performed three songs at the start, then two more later in the program. The occasion was duly utilized by both camps for publicity.

During the afternoon of 16th February the group performed a full dress rehearsal which was also filmed. Knowing it was only a dress rehearsal, Lennon took a few more liberties than usual, but as can be compared on the two performances, John's crip imitation with Paul's disapproving shake of the head was noticeably absent from the evening broadcast.

On this date they performed six songs; three openers and three closers for the show. The third show, broadcast on 23rd February, had actually been taped earlier in the day on 9th Feb. Which explains why there are only three songs performed on this edition, two to start and just one to close. The Beatles appeared live for the final time on 14th August when they taped their contribution ultimately broadcast on 12th September. Like all previous broadcasts this one was also in black-and-white, with Ed informing the audience at the end of this show that from the following week the show would be broadcast in colour!

The Beatles had missed it by just a few days and their monochrome existence was now set in stone in history. In later years the Fab Four would provide filmed promotional clips of songs to air exclusively on Ed Sullivan's program. On 25th November The Beatles filmed ten promotional clips in black-and-white for five songs. Although ten were shot, only nine are known to have survived - the first version of Day Tripper is the missing one. They were all shot by Intertel VTR Services and filmed in black-and-white, although still photos from the sessions were shot in colour.

There is no substitution of better quality versions from recent official releases, these are the originals presented in the best quality possible - including slates and longer intros and runouts.

The longest slate is over 40 seconds long and some even show assistants in shot winding cable or cleaning their glasses or just getting in the way. Really are unedited, indeed. Some extra bonus versions of these songs are included on disc one as identified below. On 19th and 20th May The Beatles filmed six promotional clips in black-and-white for both sides of their latest single.

Paperback Writer four versions and Rain two versions all being performance style takes. Top international reviews. The film documents the group rehearsing and recording songs for their twelfth and final studio album Let It Bein January The film includes an unannounced rooftop concert by the group, their last public performance.

The film was originally planned as a television documentary which would accompany a concert broadcast. When plans for a broadcast were dropped, the project became a feature film. Although the film does not dwell on the dissension within the group at the time, it provides some glimpses into the dynamics that would lead to their break-up.

Let It Be has not been officially available on home video since the s, although original and bootleg copies of the film still circulate, while early attempts to release the film on DVD and Blu-ray did not come to fruition. The film observes the Beatles John LennonPaul McCartneyGeorge Harrison and Ringo Starr from a " fly on the wall " perspective, without narration, scene titles, or interviews with the main subjects.

The first portion of the film shows the band rehearsing on a sound stage at Twickenham Film Studios. The songs are works in progress, with discussions among the band members about ways to improve them. During a mildly tense conversation, Harrison responds: "I'll play whatever you want me to play, or I won't play at all if you don't want me to play.

Whatever it is that will please you, I'll do it. The Beatles are then shown individually arriving at Apple headquarters, where they begin the studio recording process with Harrison singing " For You Blue " while Lennon plays slide guitar. Starr and Harrison are shown working on the structure for " Octopus's Garden " and then demonstrating it for George Martin. Billy Preston accompanies the band on impromptu renditions of several rock and roll coversas well as Lennon's improvised jam " Dig It ," while Linda Eastman's daughter Heather plays around the studio.

Lennon is shown listening as McCartney expresses his concern about the band's inclination to stay confined to the recording studio. For the final portion of the film, the Beatles and Preston are shown giving an unannounced concert from the studio rooftop.

The police eventually make their way to the roof and try to bring the show to a close, as the show was disrupting businesses' lunch hour nearby. This prompts some ad-libbed lyrical asides from McCartney: during the second performance of 'Get Back,' he sings, "Get back, Loretta Get back, Loretta! In response to the applause from the people on the rooftop after the final song, McCartney says, "Thanks Mo! After the stressful sessions for The Beatles a.

The plan was to give a live performance featuring new songs, broadcast as a television special and recorded for release as an album. At one point McCartney considered launching a tour; however, the idea was quickly shot down by the other members.

Unlike their recent albums, their new material would be designed to work well in concert, without the benefit of overdubs or other recording tricks.

Many ideas were floated concerning the location of the concert. Conventional venues such as The Roundhouse in London were discussed, but they also considered more unusual locations such as a disused flour mill and an ocean liner.

The location that received the most consideration was a Roman amphitheatre in North Africa. None of the ideas gained unanimous enthusiasm and with time limited by Starr's upcoming commitment to the film The Magic Christianit was agreed to start rehearsals without a firm decision on the concert location. Denis O'Dell, head of Apple's film division, suggested filming the rehearsals in 16 mm for use as a separate "Beatles at Work" television documentary which would supplement the concert broadcast.

Michael Lindsay-Hogg was hired as the director, having previously worked with the Beatles on promotional films for " Paperback Writer ", " Rain ", " Hey Jude " and " Revolution ". The Beatles assembled at Twickenham Film Studios on 2 Januaryaccompanied by the film crew, and began rehearsing. We had two cameras and just about did the same thing.

The sessions were later described by Harrison as "the low of all-time" and by Lennon as "hell The problem with that was I had bonded or was developing a relationship with George, exclusive of them. I think it fitted a need of his and mine, that he could elevate himself by having this guy that could be like a gunslinger to them.

Lennon would use my name every now and then for clout, as if I was the fastest gun. So, I don't think I could have been brought into the whole thing because I was too much a mate of George's.

At a meeting on 15 January, Harrison agreed to return with the conditions that elaborate concert plans be dropped and that work would resume at Apple's new recording studio.
